Montagna in Italia

Anno Paolino

Baroque sculpture

Baroque sculpture decorates the interior and Estasi di Santa Teresaexterior of buildings and churches. Many different materials were used and combined to obtain polychromatic effects: different types of marble, gold stuccos, bronze and great mirrors.
The most important Baroque sculptor was Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who was very skilled in working with marble and achieved highly dramatic and realistic effects, thanks to chiaroscuro contrasts and the illusion of colours.
Other than large statues, interesting artefacts from this period are carved figures for nativity scenes in terracotta or wood and small china figurines.
